Guns and Bibles

January 21, 2010

So there’s a company in Michigan that makes gun sights and puts Bible verses on them:  Inscribing verses on weapons (or on your face, if you’re a quarterback who thinks a couple national championships are enough) has a very long history, which is not to say that invoking scripture as you’re shooting at someone is any less creepy than it sounds.

Here, I think this is a missed opportunity – the verses mentioned in this story, anyway, just seem to refer to how cool the sight is.  It lets you shoot stuff in the dark, so John 8:12 is all like, “he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”  You could do a lot better with the bible, if you want some inspiration when you’re shooting things or, you know, people, and feel that that inspiration should come from scripture.  I’d say my pick would be 2 Kings 2:23-24, where some kids mock a prophet for being bald and get what’s coming to them: as he was going up by the way, young lads came out from the city and mocked him and said to him, ‘Go up, you baldhead; go up, you baldhead!’ When he looked behind him and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two female bears came out of the woods and tore up forty-two lads of their number.”
